Test API Configuration Recovery

Use separately stored backups; test a recovery copy without assuming password reset decrypts old files

An export snapshot is not a live provider backup. Record the SaaS product, tenant, export method, schema or API version, change window, secret-scan result, named owner and tested import or rebuild route.

01 / DECISION

Protect the configuration snapshot without hiding ownership

A backup is useful only when an authorized person can restore the intended snapshot version and verify it. Keep at least one independently stored recovery copy, protect it appropriately and run a fictional-file drill before relying on the workflow for configuration change-critical configuration evidence.

Admin-team scenario

A SaaS administrator freezes a pre-backup snapshot version for platform owner review. The team first proves the workflow with fictional configuration evidence files, documents each authorized role and preserves the working source separately.

02 / PROCEDURE

Run the control sequence

  1. 01

Identify the configuration snapshot version and acceptable recovery point.

  2. 02

Create a separately stored protected backup under a named owner.

  3. 03

Use fictional files to test the complete restore procedure.

  4. 04

Restore into an isolated location and compare the manifest.

  5. 05

Document password, key and owner dependencies without recording secrets.

03 / RECORD

Preserve decision evidence

Record backup ID, source snapshot version, location class, protection, owner, restore system, test date, manifest comparison, elapsed time, exception and next drill.

Stop when

  • The backup shares the same device or failure domain.
  • Password reset is assumed to decrypt an old archive.
  • The restored copy has not been opened and compared.

The record should show the approved snapshot version, tested environment, responsible people and known limitations without storing passwords or unnecessary configuration snapshot content.

04 / BOUNDARY

Separate the surrounding controls

Does not replace provider permissions, guaranteed backup, password recovery or enterprise identity management. Encryption does not assign provider permissions, verify a recipient, preserve every backup or remove plaintext working copies automatically.

05 / QUESTIONS

Configuration snapshot archive questions

Should the encrypted archive become the live configuration snapshot?

No. Keep the authoritative editable plan in the approved working system and archive named snapshot versions deliberately.

Does resetting a password recover an existing archive?

Do not assume so. Document the product-specific recovery boundary and test a separate recovery copy.
